We got a notice from the school nurse that Eli didn't pass the eye exam and would need to have a more extensive eye exam so we took him to an Ophthalmologist. Looks like my first child and last child have more in common than the same initials (EDR). Ethan and Eli both have "lazy eye" where their right eye is weaker than the left and then the brain just slowly stops using the right eye until they go blind. With Ethan we took him to an Optometrist who didn't suggest a patch but just put him in glasses. His eye has gotten worse over the years and now he can barely see out of it without his glasses or contacts. This Dr. that we took Eli to gave him glasses and said to make him wear a patch for 3 hours every day on his left eye to strengthen his right eye. I'm hoping it works and that his brain will start to use his right eye again. (update: It has been a lot harder getting him to wear the patch than I thought it would be but we're trying to get him to wear it for a least 2 hours at a time)
