Mom checking up on the progress |
![]() |
Jake and Brad about half way through painting the "exercise" room. |
Grandma Merrill wanted her downstairs room painted before the girls (Ellie and Elena) came home this summer. She asked Brad and Jake if they wanted to help out and earn a little cash for themselves. Of course they said yes! She was going to paint it green and cream but then she didn't like the cream colors and came back with a lilac (that I thought looked pink on the sample) but turned out perfect with the wallpaper in that room. So the boys got to work. Jake started to mask off the floor and Brad started caulking all the spaces between the trim and walls and ceiling. (Dennis told mom it HAD to be done and couldn't believe it had never been done before! :) Mom said the look he gave her when she told him it had never been done was hilarious.
Another side note about the "caulking":
Mom had a hard time with that word. She kept calling it "corking". So when we went down to check on the boys' progress, she said, "Brad, you're doing a great job at corking." I told her it was called "caulking" and she was the "corker". She said, "Okay then, I'm the cocker". I started laughing and told her she better stick to "corking". The boys and I about died! I don't think she even understood why we were laughing so hard! We really do need to write a book of all her funny sayings!
Anyway, the boys worked about 10 hours that first day and then finished up the kitchen ceiling the next morning. They had a good time and I think they enjoyed spending the night at Grandma and Grandpa's. Grandma and Grandpa paid them handsomely too and they were pretty excited about that. Brad went right out and bought himself an alarm clock so he can get up at 6:00 every morning to go running with his friend, James Hanna. He said he didn't want to sleep in during the summer. Jake is saving his money for the trip to California that he is dying to take!

Can't wait to see all these home improvements! Dennis better not check out my paint job! Yikes!
I'm sure your walls and trim are at least caulked. Mom said they were like that when they moved in and they just painted over it. :) Dennis just couldn't stand to see big gaps between the trim and walls and ceilings. He wanted his boys to do it right. I'm glad he's passing on his work ethic and eye for detail to his little men. :)
Blake took full advantage of that room and enjoyed sleeping in there every night. It was calm, peaceful and cold! All things he likes. That mom, she sure is a hoot! I need my master bedroom painted and I will pay handsomely too if they want to make the drive!
